Dartmouth College
Hanover, New Hampshire
Supervisor: Deborah Howe, Collections Conservator
This is the organization chart for Dartmouth Library, which exists within the Dartmouth college system. All named positions are people that I had direct contact with over the course of my internship.
During this internship I am completing treatments on both circulating and non-circulating collections, assisting with digitization projects, teaching classes on conservation and bookbinding, and managing the lab’s social media.

Book of Hours Treatment
This manuscript had several structural issues that required creative solutions as well as collaboration between the conservation lab and the special collections library.
I completed the full treatment of this book with consultation from Deborah Howe.

Dartmouth Newspaper 1915-16 Treatment
A years worth of bound newspapers, this book is heavily used in the reading room, and had damage related to this, as well as its large size.

-
Panama Canal Book Treatment
A detached front board meant that this treatment was more straightforward than others, but was a good example of typical repairs needed in a used collection.
I completed the full treatment of this book with consultation from Deborah Howe.

-
Figgins Type Treatment
This book came to the lab missing its back board, so this treatment involved both the stabilization of original material, as well as the addition of newer structural elements.
I completed the full treatment of this book with consultation from Deborah Howe.

World Map Treatment
This treatment involved a large wall map that was donated to the college. It was very discolored due to light exposure and acidic housing materials.
I completed the whole treatment of this map, along with my classmate Katarina Stiller, and consultation from Carolyn Frisa.

Boston Theater Logbook
In Progress
This book was housed in what appeared to be a PVC jacket. It had no spine and the sewing was completely compromised. I will be surface cleaning, resewing, and rebacking the book.

Teaching
While at Dartmouth College I have helped with teaching students both about conservation, and conservation education, as well as bookbinding within the book arts department.
There have also been many opportunities to participate in lab tours.
I have taught several classes including:
Long-Stitch Binding
Pamphlet Making
Introduction to Conservation-Museum Studies Class, Dartmouth College

Custom Enclosures
Dartmouth has a large collection of artist books, many of which don’t fit into the usual “codex” format. These require custom enclosures to keep them safe, and I have gotten the chance to build several of these unique boxes.

Social Media
I have been working to make the conservation lab’s social media more robust to allow for more interactions both within the college and with the public as a whole.
While I have been working with the account we have increased our interactions, as well as increasing our following by almost 130.

Digitization
Dartmouth has a very robust program of digitizing different library collections, and part of my role this year has been to consult with the digitization team to make sure the items are stable enough to go through that process.
I also helped create a pilot program of attempting RTI on some of the Dartmouth Library’s collections. With the help of Roxanne Radpour Assistant Professor of Imaging Science and Documentation WUDPAC, we were able to borrow some RTI equipment. While this particular project was unsuccessful, it has opened the door to future experiments.

Photo Documentation Protocols
One of my yearlong projects was to look at the photo documentation setup, and create new procedures and guidelines to standardize the process.

Database Development
During Covid the lab switched to the online database Airtable for their conservation documentation storage and organization. A yearlong project has been to integrate the old hardcopy records with the database, as well as make sure all records had their photo documentation attached.
