My first graduate summer internship took place at the American Philosophical Society, and mainly focused on the conservation treatment of bound materials.

  • Synopsis of the Flora of the Western States

This book was actually two books that had been combined and interleaved with lined manuscript paper. The spine was missing and the boards needed to be reattached, along with mending throughout the text block.

  • Elements of Experimental and Natural Philosophy

This was an extremely brittle 19th century book that had the spine cover completely detached. The sewing was stabilized as much as possible and the spine was replaced. A new housing was created.

  • Panorama of Paris

This continuous panorama of Paris from the mid 1800s is folded up into a boards binding. Several of the joints between the leaves had broken and needed to be repaired.
